Burj Khalifa (Burj Dubai) Skyscraper Officially Opens Today

Although construction still continues on interior floors, the Burj skyscraper in Dubai officially opens it doors to the public today. The event will be marked by a dazzling fireworks and laser display after dark.

At 168 stories, it is the world’s tallest building and has broken countless records since construction began in late 2004, becoming the world’s tallest freestanding structure with the highest occupied floor, highest outdoor observation deck, and longest-traveling elevator.

UPDATE: Apparently this tower has just been renamed “Burj Khalifa” by the ruler of Dubai. Strange. The official height was announced as 828 meters.

Burj Dubai Skyscraper Cladding Now Complete

Workers just finished installation of over 24,000 pieces of glass and aluminum panels on the exterior of the Burj Dubai, setting another record on a tower that has already shattered several other construction-related records. The cladding required 14 tons of nuts and bolts, and over 48,000 gallons of silicone.

Burj Dubai Skyscraper Tops Out!

I’ve been watching the Burj Dubai grow for over two years, so I’m feeling much excitement with the news that it has reached its final height of 818 meters.

Although the skyscraper has topped out, there is still much work to do on the exterior and interior before the scheduled grand opening on 9-9-09.

September 21, 2004: Emaar contractors begin construction.
February 2007: Surpasses the Sears Tower as the building with the most floors.
May 13, 2007: Sets record for vertical concrete pumping on any building at 452 m (1,483 ft), surpassing the 449.2 m (1,474 ft) to which concrete was pumped during the construction of Taipei 101.
July 21, 2007: Surpasses Taipei 101, whose height of 509.2 m (1,671 ft) made it the world’s tallest building.
August 12, 2007: Surpasses the Sears Tower antenna, which stands 527.3 m (1,730 ft).
September 3, 2007: Becomes the second-tallest freestanding structure, surpassing the 540 m (1,772 ft) Ostankino Tower in Moscow.
September 12, 2007: At 555.3 m (1,822 ft), becomes the world’s tallest freestanding structure on land, surpassing CN Tower in Toronto.
April 7, 2008: At 629 m (2,064 ft), surpasses the KVLY-TV Mast to become the tallest man-made structure.
June 17, 2008: Emaar announces that Burj Dubai’s height is over 636 m (2,087 ft) and that its final height will not be given until it is completed in September 2009.
September 1, 2008: Height tops 688 m (2,257 ft), making it the tallest man-made structure ever built, surpassing the previous record-holder- the Warsaw Radio Mast in Konstantynów, Poland.
December 30, 2008: Reaches a height of 780 m (2,559 ft).
January 17, 2009: Topped out at 818 m (2,684 ft).

Burj Dubai Spire Jacking Begins

It seems like I’ve been following the progress of the world’s tallest building for years now, so it’s super-exciting to see the spire being jacked upwards from deep within the structure. If the spire extended all the way down to the top concrete floor as suspected, then it still has quite a ways to go before top out.

Here is the latest picture with the skyscraper hitting the 2,500 ft. mark.

It Keeps Growing And Growing And Growing…

The amazing Burj Dubai skyscraper is reaching the final stages of vertical growth and the spire (which will be jacked upwards from deep within the building) is already becoming visible on some of the upper floors. I’ve also included some other amazing recent shots.

Nakheel Harbour Tower To Overshadow Burj Dubai Skyscraper

Nakheel, the developer that created the man-made islands in Dubai, has announced plans to create a skyscraper that will far surpass the height of the current world’s tallest building, the Burj Dubai.

The building will have “more than 200 floors” and be part of “a multi-billion pound development”, the company said.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, a cautious Nakheel chief executive officer, Christopher O’Donnell, said: “From our perspective, we are building a tower that’s going to be over a kilometre in height. This is a complete iconic development. It may be the tallest.”

Although the exact height was not released, it is expected to be 3,280 feet or higher by its completion in 2020. That will place it comfortably ahead of Burj Dubai’s expected height of 2,684 feet when it tops out next year.
