Last week, when Michael Jackson announced that he would return to the stage in London to peform a final handful of concerts, there was much speculation in the press about whether or not he could continue to appeal to the masses. This week, he easily put those sentiments to rest.

A presale for registered users of MichaelJacksonLive.com started on Wednesday, and TicketMaster’s website immediately crashed due to the onslaught of fans trying to purchase tickets. Once promoters saw the demand for tickets, they added several more dates – extending the string of concerts into February of next year. When tickets for those shows were made available to the general public this morning at 7am, they began selling at 39,474 per hour and 657 per minute – with almost 1 million tickets and all fifty concerts sold out in less than five hours.

“We never thought ‘50 shows’ and frankly based on the queues on TicketMaster, plus the 300,000 registrants we still haven’t issued codes to (for online ticket buyers,) we could spend two years here,” AEG Live’s Randy Phillips told BBC Radio 1’s “Newsbeat” program.

When all is said and done, this will be the largest audience ever to see an artist in a single city, the most amount of people to attend a series of arena shows, and the fastest ticket sales in history.
