Hi Brian - in our first ceremony, Laurie promise to love me and to fill my life with beauty and to sweeten my leisure; I promised to love her and take care of us both, body and soul. At our legal marriage ten years later, we repeated our original promises. We used Shakespeare's sonnet 116 http://www.shakespeare-online.com/sonnets/116.html because it says it all.

Not long ago, I got an email from a woman whose gay union it had been my joy to officiate five years earlier. She attached a number of pictures; I enjoyed the trip down memory lane that looking at them made possible.

In one photo, the two love-birds are leaning over a table as they sign the certificate that one of them had created for this occasion. I had forgotten that moment, and how touched I was by this added and most important flourish.

I love thinking of that signed document hanging on their wall; certainly not official in any legal sense but a powerful reminder of their pledge to love one another fully and freely.
