Watched this film last night on DVD and didn’t enjoy it. The opening sequence with the scenic shots of the towers and Manhattan were beautiful and left me with great expectations for the rest of the movie. It quickly turned into an overdone, shallow production with cheesy flashback moments and visions of religious figures. The Marine was especially irritating, continuously reminding everyone around that we were at war, which made the film feel like it had a forced patriotic theme.
The people featured in this film are heroes, nonetheless, and deserve nothing but the utmost in respect. I’m just not sure that this was the proper way to tell their stories. A documentary would have been much better, because we could have listened to real people recounting the events.
I have mixed emotions about whether a movie about 9/11 should have even been made. This motion picture centered on a relatively narrow perspective of that awful day, which was the entrapment and survival of two police officers. I would say that United 93 gives a broader view of the events, but no film has yet to capture the indescribable horror and fear felt by New Yorkers and people around the globe. I’m not sure it’s possible or even appropriate to try.
My rating: C
