We went to see this film this afternoon and it was great! A very heartwarming, inspiring story about a man and his son struggling with poverty and homelessness. Will Smith will surely be considered for an Oscar next year, as his acting skills improve with every movie. Will’s real-life son makes his acting debut, and was fantastic.
One thing in the film made me really think about something. Will Smith’s character is recounting the phrase “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” from the Declaration of Independence, and he is pondering the meaning of “pursuit of”. He finally decides that the writer included those words because happiness is something we are all striving for, but can never achieve. I’d never thought about it that way, but I think he may be right.
My rating: A
On an unrelated note, just before the movie started playing, a lady who was coming into the theater fell backwards down the steps and hit so hard that she obviously severely injured herself. It was a rather scary moment. Several people rushed to help her and call an ambulance, but the truly shocking part was that alot of the people didn’t react at all. They just continued sitting there, eating their popcorn and laughing amongst themselves as if nothing had happened.
After the paramedics arrived and placed the grimacing woman on a stretcher, some of the inconsiderate spectators even began to applaud. It just seemed so totally inappropriate, because I wondered why they were clapping; was it because she was being taken to the hospital, or because they were finally going to get to see the movie?
It’s times like those that I lose my faith in humanity.
